Jr. High Core Values

VALUE ONE – WORSHIP
Redeemer Lutheran Church desires to have families faithful in worship attendance.
Psalm 95:6 “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.”
God’s word shows us over and over the benefits of being faithful in worship and study, and the pitfalls when we stray from the fellowship of faith.   In order to encourage families to worship together, we will include the following as part of the confirmation program:
A covenant signed committing to regular attendance, special youth worship event at retreats, which will include accountability for worship attendance through tracking of attendance through church office records.
VALUE TWO – DISCIPLESHIP
Redeemer Lutheran Church desires to have families learn the basics of Christian doctrine.
1 Peter 3:15 “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”
7 & 8 th GRADE
Parents are asked to take an active role in confirmation instruction, following God’s directives in His word.  In the Bible parents instructed in their homes, as well the teaching that happened in synagogues.  Proverbs 1:3 “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”  Initially in the Lutheran church, parents were to instruct their children in their homes, using Martin Luther’s Small Catechism as their source.  Redeemer asks parents to assist their child in completing worksheets provided. Students and parents should read the assigned material, and then do it, the Bible and the Catechism help in completing the worksheets, and your discussion with your child is very valuable.  Any question asked on the worksheet can be answered using these two resources.
Meetings will be made up of lecture and small group discussions, based on Catechism and Bible.  Each year we will cover 3 of the six chief parts of doctrine, as set out for us in Luther’s Catechism, using the Bible as our chief source book.  As this is year two in our cycle, we will be covering Unit 1 – Holy Baptism, Unit 2 – The Ten Commandments, and Unit 3 – Confession & Absolution.  Worksheets for the unit will be distributed during class period. Students should come with a Bible, a Catechism, there folders (provided by Redeemer) a pen or pencil and there assigned homework.
Testing for Knowledge
In order to insure that the students have the answers they will need, the material covered in each unit will be tested at the end of the unit.  Students will be tested during the education sessions.
Memory Work
Proverbs 7:1, 3b  “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you...write them on the tablet of your heart.”  God commanded us to have His words in our heart and mind, and that is why we include memory work as part of Confirmation. Parents are responsible to see that students complete all memory work assignments, which will be given to the students during class session.  Parents would benefit as well to learn memory work assignments, make it a family project.  (Remember kids learn from your example!)
VALUE THREE - SERVICE & LEADERSHIP
Redeemer Lutheran Church desires to have families faithful in serving God and others.
James 2:14, 8b “What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds?  I will show you my faith by what I do.”
Students are encouraged to use their God-given talents in service to His church and to other people.  In order to help hold students accountable, they will be required to complete a total of 8 hours of service over the course of one year.   Projects that they can do include, but aren’t limited to:
Serving the homeless, drama and music for worship or events, set up for events, working funeral Luncheons, cleaning at church, Acolyte, Altar Guild, ushering, Vacation Bible School, or community work they develop. Redeemer will offer one Sunday night a month for the students to complete there service hours. We will either be at a hope for special need individuals or a nursing home. A schedule will be handed out in confirmation class.
Students should write the date and time of service, what they did, and have an adult supervisor sign as their witness.   These forms will be returned by the date shown on the form to the DCE.   Parents are asked to be responsible and proactive in helping their student complete service hours.
VALUE FOUR - FELLOWSHIP
Redeemer Lutheran Church desires to have families enjoy the Christian family God gives us here in our church.
Psalm 133:1  “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!”
One of the goals held in this program is to help students build strong Christian friendships within confirmation ministry. We are will have a Jr. High specific “Youth Group” night once a month. During this time we will have games, food, singing, fun and devotion. We are looking at Sunday night for this activity.
VALUE FIVE - MENTORING
Redeemer Lutheran Church desires to have families learn
from those who have gone before us.
Proverbs 13:18 “He who walks with the wise grows wise.”
Mentoring during the confirmation process happens with parents and church staff as we work through the materials.  Make sure that you take opportunities to discuss with your student what is being covered, and help them to apply the Bible and catechism teachings to their everyday lives
